Innerscapes
Artists have a signature style. They create a body of work that is distinctly theirs. Think of Van Gogh's clear, dramatic brush strokes, Warhol's colorful pop art screenprints, or Banksy's political graffiti stencil murals. For a long time I didn't pay attention to what made my art, well, mine. I was caught up in the relief of expressing myself. I didn't care if my paintings fit a four word description, I simply loved the act of letting go and creating.
Over the years however, I came to realize that my style is Innerscape. Whether it was figures emerging from a flowing background, black and white portraits contrasted with colorful instruments, or splashes and splatter of colors formed into animals, my paintings were my joy and my pain. They helped me reflect on experiences and make sense of my life.
The subjects in my paintings are almost always intertwined with the backgrounds. Each painting I make asks- do we form our environments and our communities or do they form us?
What is my art about? What is my distinct style?
It is the colorful blending of boundaries.
